In history except for the Neanderthal age, men and women wore always wore floral fragrances because there was no notion that the male and females should have different products. Additionally, the dividing line between the types of perfumes available in the past were based on social and economic buying power of the people living at that time as the rich and famous people smelled better than the poor and among the people who could afford to buy expensive perfumes there sure was no gender difference between the fragrances used by the male and female sexes.
The notion of fragrance ceased to break down during the 20th century when fragrances and perfumes also became accessible and affordable for the common man. Plus the modern advertisements were also the ones who started to differentiate the male and female scents and perfumes and thus the classified difference between the perfumes and scents used by male and female began.
Discover the Difference Between Fragances and Essential Oils
I have seen several brands of both fragrances and essential oils in health food stores. Most fragrances contain carrier oils since they are relatively inexpensive. Essential oils, however, should be completely pure and contain nothing but the distilled oil from the plants they were derived from. Unfortunately I have noticed that some have been diluted with other substances or contain synthetic ingredients.
I like to put different brands to the test by comparing a common peppermint essential oil. I know that one drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea, so tried I putting 5 drops of the essential oil in a 64 oz glass bottle filled with water and I found out it was far too strong to drink so I had to keep adding water to it to dilute it to taste. I tried the same experiment on other oils as well such as lemon and lime.
Using a diffuser is a great way to experience pure oils. If the essential oils aren't pure, they aren't strong as the real ones. After many trials, it is easy to test for purity of oils by smell and rubbing a few drops between your fingers. My eyes water more when I am handling pure oils as well. They have been around for thousands of years. Egyptian grave robbers would often steal a pharoah's essential oils instead of gold treasures since they considered them more valuable.

A hint of violet might remind us of a much loved relative, whilst lower notes such as sandalwood send you back to a beautiful balmy evening on holiday. Too many smells in a short space of time is equivalent to hurtling into a DVD of our lives on super-speed - no wonder it can feel overwhelming!
